Istanbul island's

Istanbul is a metropolis filled with secrets scattered across its many corners. Today, I want to share one of those secrets that often goes unnoticed by most tourists visiting this ancient city: the Princes’ Islands (Adalar).
Located near the city’s coast, these islands make up a district spread across four main islands: Büyükada, Burgazada, Kınalıada, and Heybeliada. We took a ferry to the second largest of them, Heybeliada.
Like the rest of Istanbul, Heybeliada reflects the rich blend of cultures and peoples that have shaped the city into what it is today. You can see this in the island’s architecture, with charming houses and mansions surrounded by lush gardens filled with fruit trees.

Gardens on Heybeliada often reflect the island’s Mediterranean-influenced climate.

10 Tips for Visiting Heybeliada

  1. Catch the Ferry Early
Start your day early to enjoy the scenic ferry ride and give yourself plenty of time to explore the island without rushing.

  2. Pack Comfortable Shoes
Heybeliada is best experienced on foot, with its charming streets and walking paths. Comfortable shoes are a must for exploring!

  3. Rent a Bike
For a fun and easy way to get around, rent a bike when you arrive. It's an eco-friendly way to cover more ground and enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

  4. Visit the Monastery
Don’t miss the Halki Seminary and the Church of the Holy Trinity, perched on a hill. The peaceful atmosphere and views are worth the climb.

  5. Bring Snacks or Plan to Dine Local
Pack a small picnic for a relaxing meal outdoors, or treat yourself to fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants.

  6. Explore the Mansions
Take a stroll through the neighborhoods to admire the historic mansions and their colorful gardens. They’re a window into the island’s storied past.

  7. Enjoy the Beaches
If the weather allows, visit one of Heybeliada’s beaches for a swim or to soak up the sun. The waters are calm and inviting.

  8. Respect the Island’s Tranquility
Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the island, so take this opportunity to embrace the peaceful atmosphere and slower pace of life.

  9. Try Local Sweets
Stop by a local bakery or café to taste traditional Turkish desserts and pastries—they’re a delicious way to fuel your adventure.

  10. Watch the Sunset
Stay until evening to catch a breathtaking sunset over the sea. It’s the perfect way to end your visit to this charming island.
